Preparing for the 4th of July...

The 4th of July is just a day away and we are in party preparation mode here! The lawn is being mowed, the flower beds are weeded, and the food preparation and baking has begun. Thankfully, many residents on Lake Stevens go all out with fireworks so we can just sit back and enjoy the show...without making a trip a Boom City nearby.

We enjoy having friends over to enjoy the late afternoon and evening with us, so along with that comes food, of course! Our food prep for the 4th of July is pretty traditional...and that just feels right. We serve up clam dip and chips, hamburgers and hot dogs, calico beans, yummy salads, and Flag cake...of course. I realized looking back through some photos recently that I have been making this cake for over 20 years...a long time! I think this cake first appeared on the cover of a Woman's Day magazine in the late 80's or early 90's, but now you see it everywhere.

Another dessert I love to make for the 4th of July...and throughout the summer...is fruit pizza. I usually make an oatmeal cookie base, add sweetened cream cheese, and then the fruit, arranging it to look something like this...

When short of time, I've also made mini fruit pizzas by purchasing sugar cookies at Haggen's bakery as the base and decorating those, like this...

You can tell I like desserts...since I focus on that first! But I do love some of the other foods as well, like Calico Beans. I know I've been making these beans for most of our married life too. I just love the combination of different types of beans, a little bacon, and hamburger thrown in to add taste and texture.

The salad I'm planning to make came from Pinterest...just love the red, white, and blue!

Have I made you hungry yet?!! I know...my palate is getting happy just looking at the photos! We are adding salmon into the mix this year and a few other surprises...I have to mix things up a little bit anyway! What foods say "4th of July" to you?
